Inside the Unsubtitled site
- Three speech levels, casual, polite and formal, set by who you're talking to
- Replies pitched to each learner's level, from beginner to fluent
- Forty illustrated scenes with four voiced characters
- Corrections on grammar, vocabulary and politeness
- Optional furigana, romaji and translation
The brief
Unsubtitled is a web app for practicing spoken Japanese the way it's actually used: out loud, in everyday scenes, with characters who answer back in their own voices. Japanese changes with who you're talking to, so every conversation runs at one of three speech levels: casual with a friend, polite with a coworker, formal with a customer. Learners hear and practice the politeness the language runs on, and each character pitches its replies to the learner's own level, so it works from first words to fluent.
How it's built
A Next.js app with illustrated, voiced characters, AI-generated replies, and corrections on grammar, vocabulary and politeness. Furigana, romaji and translation are there when a learner needs them, and free and Premium tiers sign in with Google.
